By every possible criteria, the book has been in the public domain in the UK for several years now. gothictextshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11933780138247429746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152233105471728342.post-55593725277314414142017-09-18T13:39:46.339-07:002017-09-18T13:39:46.339-07:00I thank you for adding the First Miss Symons to my...I thank you for adding the First Miss Symons to my to-buy list.

Speaking of Sundial, you are so right!! I wish they'd either print it or remove it from their offerings. In the meantime though, I recently purchased their Rosemary Timperley collection From Another World and Other Ghost Stories, The Alabaster Hand by A.N.L. Munby, and I'm indebted to a friend in Manchester for purchasing for me Richmal Crompton's Mist and Other Ghost Stories, which is not available for purchase here in the US.

NancyOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12027036137062767840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152233105471728342.post-60268068092754562282017-09-17T12:13:55.650-07:002017-09-17T12:13:55.650-07:00Yes, that is the publishers. Not only this July, but I remember they had the book with an alternative front cover advertised back in 2014 (!)when I first found out that Mayor had written a collection that was half ghost stories, half realistic stories. The Rector's Daughter is highly renowned, the book where she finds her own true voice, but the First Miss Symons I think is one of the best Edwardian period British novels ever written - to me it overshadows some of the more famous contemporaries. It is done almost in a French, Maupassant pessimistic style. Really a short novella but once read, never forgotten.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152233105471728342.post-50470880699477815852017-09-16T14:27:20.086-07:002017-09-16T14:27:20.086-07:00oh sorry -- I didn't make it a true link for w...oh sorry -- I didn't make it a true link for which I apologize. Yes, I'm wondering if you're talking about Sundial Press, which was supposed to have had the Room Opposite and Other Stories out this past July:

http://www.sundialpress.co.uk/FLORA%20MAYOR.html

It's so frustrating to see a photo of the book and yet not be able to buy it for a decent price. Aarrrgh. I wish the agent would get over it, sell the rights and let diehard fans like myself buy the damn book already.

I do thank you for mentioning her novels -- I just picked up The Rector's Daughter (also from Virago). The agent apparently claims to own the copyright to F M Mayor's short story collection The Room Opposite and Other Stories ( of which Miss De Mannering of Asham is a part). The publisher has been going on and on for literally years announcing this book, which it seems is never going to come out due to a legal deadlock. Meanwhile the collection goes for thousands of pounds on ebay. It seems a shame, as the two novels by Mayor that I have read are among the most memorable of their time I can remember: not smart, intellectual or snobbish, but real and true works of art.
